What is changing with WhatsApp pricing on 1 October 2026

A plain-language guide to the WhatsApp Business Platform pricing change taking effect 1 October 2026, and what actually changes for you.

Updated 8 September 2026

Starting 1 October 2026, WhatsApp is updating the way businesses are charged for messages. If you use WhatChimp on top of WhatsApp Business API, or if you are thinking about moving from the regular WhatsApp Business App to WhatChimp, here is what you need to know in plain language.

What is changing

Right now, when a customer messages your business, you have 24 hours to reply back and forth. Meta calls this the "customer service window," and everything you send inside it has been free.

From 1 October, two kinds of messages sent inside that 24-hour window start being charged:

  • Your free-form replies (a normal text or image reply, not a template)
  • Utility templates you send inside the same window (for example, an order confirmation you send while chatting with the customer)

Both are charged at the same rate Meta already applies to utility templates in your country. In India that is about 0.115 Rupees per message. In Brazil about 0.008 US Dollars. In the UK about 0.022 US Dollars. These are small per-message amounts. Rates can change at the start of any quarter, and the current live rates for every country are on Meta's rate card.

You get 1,000 free service messages every month

This is the part that most customers miss. Meta is introducing a free monthly tier alongside the pricing change. Every business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages per month. Meta only starts charging from the 1,001st outbound service message onward each month, and the count resets at the start of the next month.

For most small and mid-sized businesses, this means you will not see any actual Meta charge for service messages unless you exceed 1,000 outbound replies in a single month.

Important: to get the 1,000 free service messages and to send anything beyond that, your business must have a payment method attached in Meta's Billing Hub. Businesses that do not have a payment method will get the first 1,000 messages delivered each month, but any messages after that will not be delivered until a payment method is added.

What is NOT changing

This part is important, because the news often makes it sound worse than it is.

  • Incoming messages from your customers are still free. Meta's own wording: "Messages sent from a WhatsApp user to a business are not charged." You do not pay when a customer messages you. You only pay for the messages you send back.
  • Marketing and authentication templates continue exactly as before. Same pricing you already have. Nothing about template messaging becomes more expensive.
  • Click to WhatsApp Ads still get a 72-hour free window. When a customer arrives from a WhatsApp Ad or a Facebook call-to-action button, you get a full 72 hours where every message you send, including templates, is free.

A simple example

A customer messages your online shop asking about a product. That message costs you nothing.

You reply with four messages: a greeting, the product details, the price, and a link to buy. Today those four replies are free. From 1 October, those four replies still fall inside your 1,000 free monthly service messages, so they remain free for you at that volume. Only once you cross 1,000 outbound service messages in a month do additional messages start being charged at your country's utility rate.

What this means for you

Nothing changes on your side today. Your WhatChimp setup keeps working exactly the same way.

The main shift is that from October, if your business sends more than 1,000 outbound service messages in a single month, you will start seeing a small per-message charge for the ones beyond 1,000. Marketing and authentication templates, incoming customer messages, and Click to WhatsApp Ads windows all stay free.

Make sure a payment method is attached to your WhatsApp Business Account in Meta's Billing Hub before 1 October so your messaging is not disrupted at the point you cross the free tier.
