How to keep your WhatsApp costs low under the new pricing

Practical steps you can take today to keep your WhatsApp monthly cost low after the 1 October 2026 pricing change, including the 1,000 free service messages allowance.

Updated 8 September 2026

The WhatsApp pricing change on 1 October 2026 is small per message, and Meta is also giving every business phone number 1,000 free service messages per month. For most small businesses, that free tier will cover the entire month with no charge at all. Here are the practical steps to stay comfortably inside the free tier or keep costs low if you go beyond it.

1. Make sure your payment method is in Meta's Billing Hub

Even to get the 1,000 free service messages, Meta needs a payment method on file. Businesses without a payment method get the first 1,000 messages each month, but any message after that will simply not be delivered until a payment method is added. Attach a card to your WhatsApp Business Account in Meta's Billing Hub well before 1 October so nothing is disrupted at the point you cross the free tier.

2. Use Click to WhatsApp Ads for new customer acquisition

When someone arrives at your business through a Click to WhatsApp Ad or a Facebook call-to-action button, you get a full 72-hour free window. Every message you send inside that window is free, including templates. Messages in this window do not count against your 1,000 free service messages either.

If you are already running WhatsApp Ads, keep doing so. If you are not, this is a good moment to try one small campaign and see the free window in action.

3. Keep replies short and clear

You are charged per outbound message from 1 October, but only after the first 1,000 in a month. Still, a single well-written reply costs less than three short chatty ones, and helps you stay inside the free tier for longer.

Before you or your team hit send, ask: can this be one message instead of three? Simple change, real savings if your team handles a lot of chats.

4. Save your most-used replies as canned responses

The Omnichannel Inbox lets you save common answers as canned responses, so your team can send them with one click. This helps keep messages consistent and short, and stops the habit of sending "typing..." followed by three separate lines.

5. Design bot flows that answer common questions in fewer steps

If your bot flow greets the customer, asks their preference, then confirms, then answers, that is four messages instead of one. Review your flows and combine steps where you can.

The goal is not to strip warmth from the conversation. It is to remove steps that do not add value for the customer.

6. Track your usage each month

WhatChimp shows message counts in your analytics. Meta also shows charged messages in WhatsApp Manager. Check both at the end of each month for the first few months after the change so you know what "normal" looks like for your business, and how comfortably you are staying inside the 1,000 free service messages tier.

If you notice a spike, look at which conversations are driving it and see if a template or a canned response can replace what is happening today.

A note on your AI Agent

If you run a WhatChimp AI Agent, remember that every reply your AI sends is a service message and counts toward the 1,000 free tier. AI Agents can be chatty by default. Keeping AI responses focused and concise is not just good customer experience, it also helps your free tier last longer.

You can adjust the AI's tone and length in your AI training data.
